Oh fandom
at November 20th, 2007 (02:47 pm)

Am I the only one disheartened by how it seems like 80% of Heroes fandom is now screaming for Mohinder to be sent to the proverbial guillotine? Noah can shoot his former partner in cold blood and be called a badass for it. But once Mohinder shoots Noah to prevent him from killing someone else, people cry out in fury for Mohinder's slow and painful death.

WTF fandom. I get that you think Mr. Bennet is cool. I like him a lot too. And I understand why most of you like him more than Mohinder. But to claim Mohinder must now die because he did a terrible thing? Seriously? I can't imagine how the Bennet, Sylar, and Adam fangirls could say that with a straight face. Unless only white men get to be bad and get away with it.

I'm really not understanding that at all. He was put in an impossible position with no good out, and he made a choice, a very understandable choice and arguably the right choice.

But my love of Bennet has gone down a lot since he killed that other guy in cold blood. I don't think he's redeemable now.

O_o. Am not in the general Heroes fandom because of the Peter focus, so I didn't see this. Arrrrrrrrrrrgh.

Haha, so right. I'm a Bennet fangirl myself, but let's face it, the guy's had it coming all season. Mohinder doesn't deserve to die IMO, even if I am all kinds of pissed at him right now. What he needs is storylines where he's more than just a useless plot device, regardless of whether or not they include shooting Noah.

Word. I caught just the top layer of that over at eonline.com and was scratching my head. I mean, Noah was perfectly willing to kill Mohinder and then tried to kill Bob! Mohinder killing Noah was Wrong (becuase Murder is Bad) but it was a pretty damn understandable action. And shit, Noah didn't even stay dead! Yesh.

I am betting that the next episode will reveal that this was part of Bennet's plan and then fandom will like Mohinder again, as he is still Noah's bitch.

Runaways: Xavin and Karolina

The fandom seems to be divided on Mohinder. Earlier that episode people were demanding that Elle be maimed/killed just because she touched him. (Heroes fandom: making me *headdesk* since 2006.)

Whaaaat? 80%? Really? I haven't seen any of this in any of the Heroes communities I frequent, but the way you describe the situation reminds me a lot of how the LOST fanbase treated Ana Lucia because she beat up Sawyer - a fan favourite, and white male - despite the fact that Sawyer made a living by ruining other people's lives, and killed lots of people in cold blood. Yet Ana was the "deplorable" one. Go fig.

I don't know about other communities, but "kill MoHo" comments were all over ontd_discussion and ontd Heroes posts after the episode aired. Not that we would expect much out of ontd ;)

Only white men are allowed to be "badass".

I'm seeing Mohinder-hatred at both eonline.com/gossip/kristin (in the recap; I didn't look at the comments) and televisionwithoutpity.com (in thread for discussing race and gender issues, which is the only thread besides the hoyay one I've looked at). And it's really really disturbing.

Because the fans all seem perfectly capable as to why Noah committed the actions he did, no matter how wrong they were. But Mohinder is not being extended the same empathy, even though his reasons were just as valid. I mean, Noah killed Ivan in cold blood, was perfectly willing to kill Mohinder in cold blood, and was about to kill Bob in cold blood. Yeah, Bob's not winning #1 Human of the Year any time soon, but Mohinder had damn good reasons for seeing Noah as out of control and needing to be taken down. I also rather liked that in shooting Noah, Mohinder took control of the action, determing the course of events rather than [often unwittingly] following another's plan. Except for the part where Noah doesn't die because he's a white man someone gave him the healing blood, it played out like the perfect Greek tragedy.

So the fan reaction is, well, Ana v. Sawyer Redux.

"You touched my stuff!"

And they say women don't objectify men.
